Shah Jahan was the fifth great mogul, and by faith he was a Muslim. During his reign the Mughal Empire flourished, covering most of India. Shah Jahan probably remains best known for the Taj Mahal, the magnificent tomb he built for his wife, Empress Mumtaz Mahal (her name means “jewel of the palace”). She was his third and favorite wife, and she died giving birth to their 14th child. In addition to the Taj Mahal, he also built the lavish new capital Shahjahanabad (core of modern Delhi). He was buried with his wife in the Taj Mahal.
