  • The SAAB 92 was very aerodynamic for its time. It is interesting that the entire body of the car was made from a single piece of metal, which was stamped under a press and then cut to accommodate the doors and windows.

On this day in 1949, the Swedish company SAAB introduced its first car.

Interestingly, the SAAB company originally manufactured aircraft. Indeed, the name SAAB is actually an acronym for Svenska Aeroplan AB (AB stands for “aktiebolag”, the Swedish term for limited company).

Their car model was named SAAB 92. This is interesting because the previous project, SAAB 91, was an aircraft.

During its history, the company used the fact that it manufactures both cars and airplanes for marketing purposes.

Out of Saab’s military aircraft, the SAAB 37 Viggen, which was jet-powered and could be used as a fighter and reconnaissance aircraft, is probably the best-known.
