J. Edgar Hoover was appointed director of the Bureau of Investigation on this day in 1924.

First, the bureau was named the Bureau of Investigation (BOI). It was renamed in 1935, and became the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). As the FBI director, J. Edgar Hoover had a tremendous impact on the USA. It is interesting to note that there were eight Presidents of the United States during the “reign” of J. Edgar Hoover.

Born in  1895, J. Edgar Hoover was a contemporary of Hermann Goering, Joseph Goebbels and Rudolf Hess (Hitler’s deputy). In the 1930s, when Hoover`s BOI became FBI, there were many  acts of political repression in  Europe. At the time, Heinrich Himmmler established the Gestapo as the German secret police.

Hoover was involved in founding of the FBI, and introduced many modernizations of police technology. Apparently, Hoover ordered the investigation of the many famous people at the time, and such information could have given him great power.

In 1972, Hoover died in Washington, D.C., after a heart attack (at the age of 77). He was the FBI director until his death. It is interesting to note that his mother was Anna Marie Scheitlin, and she was of Swiss-German origin.
