  • The famous apparitions at Fatima were, besides her, witnessed by her brother - Blessed Francisco Marto - and their cousin - Lucia dos Santos. It is interesting that Blessed Jacinta Marto, not counting the martyrs, is the youngest deceased person who ever became a Catholic blessed.

On this day the Blessed Jacinta Marto was born – the youngest of three children whom the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared in 1917 in Fatima. Namely, these famous apparitions were, besides her, also witnessed by her brother – Blessed Francisco Marto – and their cousin – Lucia dos Santos.

They worked as shepherds near the town of Fatima, Portugal, and they witnessed the vision of the Virgin Mary at a nearby place called Cova da Iria. Blessed Jacinta was the youngest of the three – she was only seven.

Let us just mention that Bl. Jacinta was particularly concerned about the visions of hell and the torment of hell, which they received during apparitions. Because of that she placed particular emphasis on self-denial and sacrifice, as to do penance for the sins of others, and even preserve sinners from going to hell.

Although the other two children did such a penance for the sins of others as well, it seems that the small Blessed Jacinta practiced it the most.

Bl. Jacinta died just two and a half years after the apparitions, not even turning 10 years of age. She died of the so-called Spanish flu epidemic, which hit Europe severely immediately at the end of the First World War. During her illness she suffered terrible pain because she got pleurisy, so that two of her ribs had to be removed.

In the year 2000 she was declared a blessed of the Catholic Church by Pope John Paul II, along with her brother Francisco, who died of the same epidemic of Spanish flu. The procedure for their canonization is ongoing.

It is interesting that Blessed Jacinta Marto, not counting the martyrs, is the youngest deceased person to ever become a Catholic blessed.
