Winston Churchill was born on this day, to one of the most prominent British aristocratic families. His father was Lord Randolph Churchill, younger son of the seventh Duke of Marlborough and a prominent politician (he was at one time the British Minister of Finance). His mother was Jennie Jerome, a famous beauty, the daughter of American millionaire Leonard Jerome, also called “The King of Wall Street”.



Winston was born at Blenheim Palace, the famous seat of the Duke of Marlborough in the English Oxfordshire. Interestingly, the young Winston spent his earliest years in Ireland, where his grandfather was a viceroy. At the age of 26 he already wrote three books, and was elected to the British Parliament.

Since Winston Churchill’s father died young, he was trying to quickly accomplish as much as possible in life, fearing that he will die early. However, he lived to be 90. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature for his works. Less known is the fact that Churchill was also a passionate painter. He painted more than 570 paintings, and one of them was sold for a million pounds.
