Ion Antonescu – Romanian marshal and conductor – 1882.

Antonescu made a career as a professional military officer and then became a politician.
On June 15, 1882, Ion Antonescu was born, a Romanian marshal and conductor (a title similar to the German Führer). Antonescu is one of only three marshals proclaimed in Romanian history (not counting members of the royal family). The other two were Alexandru Averescu and Constantin Prezan, but chronologically they belonged primarily to the period of the First World War, while Marshal Antonescu was active during the Second World War.

Antonescu was born in the city of Pitești, about a hundred kilometers northwest of Bucharest. Today, the headquarters of the automobile company Dacia, as well as the main factory of the largest Romanian company, are located in the immediate vicinity of Pitești. Antonescu made a career as a professional military officer and then became a politician. In the period around the beginning of the Second World War, Antonescu became the Romanian Prime Minister, and introduced authoritarian pro-fascist rule, calling himself a conductor. He collaborated with the Nazis of Adolf Hitler and committed a number of war crimes. After World War II, Romanian authorities sentenced him to death and executed him.
