1495: The Saint who established Hospitals

Story Highlights

  • Historical date:
  • 8. March 1495
  • St. John of God gave his life and energy to care for patients. He founded the famous Order of Hospitallers.

The Brothers Hospitallers of St. John of God were an order that had the honor of being entrusted with the health and dental care of the popes, founded by the Spanish saint, John of God, who was born on this day in 1495.

The life story of St. John of God is rather frightening. When he experienced a religious conversion he entered into a state of psychological crisis. That is why he was put in an asylum for the mentally ill, from which he left only after he was visited by a contemporary saint, John of Avila.

His difficult experience in the asylum taught him that patients deserve more care than that is given to them. Therefore, he devoted his life and energy to care for patients. St. John of God was joined by his followers and thus created a hospital order, the mentioned Brothers Hospitallers. He died exactly on his 55th birthday, on this day in 1550.
