On this day the comic starring the superhero Batman was launched for the first time. 



It was in the 27th issue of the American magazine “Detective Comics“. This comic was published by DC Comics, Marvel’s main competitor.

Just to recall, Marvel Comics launched the characters of Spiderman, Iron Man, the Hulk, the X-Men, etc., while DC Comics produced Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. The authors of Batman were cartoonist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger.

Batman’s real name – Bruce Wayne – is a reference to the Scottish king and national hero Robert Bruce (known from the movie Braveheart with Mel Gibson). The comic was sold for 10 cents apiece.

Today, because of the historical significance of the first appearance of Batman, copies of that issue reach the price of 1,075,000 dollars and are among the most expensive in the world of comics. In this first issue, Batman investigates the murder of a chemical industry tycoon, and his opponent is Alfred Stryker.
