Felipe VI. is a direct male descendant of King Louis XIV of France, also known as the King of the Sun, and thus a member of the former French royal dynasty of Bourbon (in Spain this dynasty is called Borbón).



On June 19, 2014, King Felipe VI ascended the Spanish throne. by the abdication of his father Juan Carlos. Previously, Juan Carlos ruled for as many as 38 years, since November 22, 1975 (former Spanish head of state Francisco Franco passed away on November 20, 1975). Felipe VI. was known during the reign of his father as the Prince of Asturias (Spanish: Príncipe de Asturias), which in Spain is a title reserved for heirs to the throne (similar to the title of Prince of Wales reserved for heirs to the throne in Great Britain). Felipe VI. he was born in Madrid in 1968, so he was 46 at the time of his accession to the throne.
