On this day back in 1913, the first crossword puzzle in history was published in the New York World newspaper. It was made by Arthur Wynne from New Jersey. It was shaped like a diamond with a hole in the middle, and was called the “Word-Cross Puzzle”. A few weeks later, the name was changed to “Cross-Word”, allegedly because of an error in the newspaper typesetting. The wrong name has been maintained in the English language till today.
