On August 17, 1945, Indonesia declared independence from the Netherlands. Interestingly, this happened just days after Japan’s capitulation in World War II (nuclear bombs were dropped on August 6 and 9 of the same year on Hiroshima and Nagasaki). The key person for Indonesia’s declaration of independence was Sukarno, who also became the country’s first president.

Today, Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world. It has a population of more than 250 million, lagging only behind India, China and the United States. Indeed, due to its high natural growth, Indonesia is catching up with the US, and could surpass it in population in the 2040s. As many as 4,500,000 children are born in Indonesia every year, which is approximately equal to the total population of the Republic of Croatia. It is also interesting that Indonesia is the largest Muslim-majority country in the world. However, on the Indonesian island of Flores, the majority of the population is Roman Catholic, as well as in the neighboring independent state of East Timor.
