2002: Founding of the World’s Largest Independent Organization for the Struggle Against Cancer

The charity Cancer Research UK has around 500 million GBP (some 800 million U.S. dollars) at its disposal every year. These funds are acquired through donations rather than from the state budget.



 

This day in 2002 marked the founding of the of the largest independent charities in the world specialized for researching cancer. Its name is Cancer Research UK, and it is based in London. In contrast to institutions funded from the state budget, Cancer Research UK is almost entirely funded by donations. It allegedly has around 40,000 volunteers as well as 4,000 employees.

 

In comparison, the largest state-funded institution for cancer research is the National Cancer Institute (USA), with an annual budget of over 5 billion dollars. In contrast, Cancer Research UK has around 500 million GBP (some 800 million U.S. dollars) at its disposal every year.
