In contrast to institutions funded from the state budget, Cancer Research UK is almost entirely funded by donations. It allegedly has around 40,000 volunteers as well as 4,000 employees.
In comparison, the largest state-funded institution for cancer research is the National Cancer Institute (USA), with an annual budget of over 5 billion dollars. In contrast, Cancer Research UK has around 500 million GBP (some 800 million U.S. dollars) at its disposal every year.
