Somaliland historically belonged to the British colonial Empire, while the rest of Somalia had been under the Italian sphere.
On this day in 1991 Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia, but remains internationally unrecognized to this day. Somaliland theoretically encompasses more than 20% of the entire territory of Somalia. It is situated in the northern part of the country, on the Red Sea coast and on the border with Djibouti and Ethiopia.
