Human rights activist Desmond Tutu was arrested during a protest in the Republic of South Africa on this day in 1988. One of the most charismatic people of the contemporary world, Tutu managed to receive almost every possible humanitarian award in the world. In 1984 he won the Nobel Peace Prize, in 1986 the Albert Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism, and in 2005 the Gandhi Peace Prize. He also attained an incredible 46 honorary doctorates. He is a friend of the Dalai Lama and many other world leaders and peace activists. Desmond Tutu became an Anglican priest and the Archbishop of Cape Town (the first black person to do so). His arrest on this day was related to his efforts in the fight for human rights. His wife was also arrested, but neither was charged, and both were soon released. It is interesting to note that many Jews consider Tutu an anti-Semite, because he compared their treatment of the Arabs in Palestine to the Nazi treatment of the Jews in the Third Reich.
