There are records stating that he was born in Párdány in Banat District, which corresponds with today’s village Međa situated in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina.

Famous competitive swimming record holder and actor Johnny Weissmuller probably remained most famous for his Tarzan roles, which he played in 12 movies. Before his acting carrier, he was one of the most successful swimmers in history. He set an unbelievable 67 world records and won 5 Olympic gold medals for swimming and one bronze medal for water polo. There were suggestions that he never lost a competition, although is sounds incredible. In any case, he won 52 U.S. National Championships.

Johnny Weissmuller was born in 1904 in the Banat. There are records stating that he was born in Párdány, which corresponds with today’s village Međa situated in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, not far from the Romanian border. Still, most of today’s formal records about Weissmuller puts his birthplace in 40 km distant Freidorf, which is not in Vojvodina, but in Romania. Controversy around his birthplace still exists. For example, the Međan Serbs decided to raise a monument to him, claiming that he was born there.

Regardless of where exactly was he born, it is important to highlight that he vas ethnic German, who were numerous in the Banat once. The local Germans, and therefore Weissmuller’s family, were Catholics, unlike the Orthodox Serbs. After a successful carrier, Johnny died at the age of 80 in Acapulco, Mexico, where he was buried. Supposedly, as his coffin was lowered into the ground, a recording of his Tarzan yell was played three times, as he had requested before he died.
