  • The assassination served the Israeli government as a pretext for war. Already the very next day, the Israeli cabinet ordered the invasion of Lebanon, with the aim of driving out the Palestinians. Two days later, powerful Israeli forces poured into southern Lebanon and began to advance towards the north.

On this day Shlomo Argov, Israeli ambassador to the United Kingdom, was shot in the center of London.

It happened in front of the Dorchester Hotel, one of the most luxurious hotels in London, in which the Beatles and Michael Jackson stayed at one time. The hotel is located in the elite Park Lane, overlooking Hyde Park, in which billionaire Mohamed Al Fayed now lives.

The Israeli ambassador was shot by Hussein Ghassan Said, an Arab member of the notorious Abu Nidal’s organization (Abu Nidal was one of the bloodiest Arab terrorist leaders).

Although the ambassador did not die, he remained paralyzed for life. The assassination served the Israeli government as a pretext for war. Already the very next day, the Israeli cabinet ordered the invasion of Lebanon, with the aim of driving out the Palestinians.

Two days later, powerful Israeli forces poured into southern Lebanon and began to advance towards the north. It was a prelude to armed struggle between Israelis and Arabs in southern Lebanon, which lasted for nearly two decades.
