After the war, he pleaded guilty during the Nuremberg trial, and was sentenced to 20 years in the Spandau Prison. There, he spent his time writing his memoirs, reading, and gardening.

He donated most of his money (which he earned by selling his books) to Jewish charities. He spent the last 15 years of his life as something of a celebrity.
