On this day in 1977, Voyager 1 was launched by NASA.



It is interesting to note that Voyager 1 still works, more than three and a half decades after its launch into space.

Its generators supply enough power for operation of its scientific instruments, which transmit data to the Earth.

At a distance of about 19 billion kilometers from the Earth, and traveling at a velocity of 38,000 mph, it is the farthest spacecraft from the Earth.

Seen from the Earth, Voyager 1 is in the area which covers the Ophiuchus constellation (or Ophiuchus).




Voyager 1 achieves an average speed of about 17,000 meters per second or 61,200 kilometers per hour.
