Story Highlights

  • historical event: The lottery for selecting those who would be recruited for the Vietnam War was performed since 1969.

On this day, an unusual method of determining who will be drafted into the army in the United States was administered for the first time. The method was as follows: only men born between 1944 and 1950 (i.e. between 18 and 25 years of age) were considered. Next, all the dates of the year were written on slips of paper, and then the papers were placed in plastic capsules and mixed. The capsules with dates were then drawn from the glass bowl. Those who were born on that date were drafted. A total of 195 dates (out of 366 – February 29 was included) were drawn and the order of recruitment was created accordingly.
