Five years after John Fitzgerald Kennedy’s death, his widow Jacqueline married the Greek shipowner Aristotle Onassis.Jackie was born Jacqueline Lee Bouvier.



Her great-great grandfather was a Frenchman, a contemporary of Napoleon Bonaparte, who emigrated to the USA. Jackie married John F. Kennedy when she was 23 years old. There were 1,200 guests at the wedding. The couple had four children, but only two survived early childhood. Kennedy was killed in 1963, while his brother Robert was killed in 1968.

Jackie started to fear for her life and the lives of her children; she wanted to leave the USA. The wealthy Onassis offered her a chance to do just that. They married on this day in 1968, on Onassis’s private island, Skorpios, near the Greek coast. Their marriage lasted until Onassis’s death seven years later. According to Greek law, she could inherit only a small part of his fortune, which amounted to 26 million dollars. She died in 1994.
