Of course, thermonuclear weapons produce much more powerful (up to 1,000 times) explosions than standard  nuclear (fission) bombs. The Soviet bomb detonated on this day had an explosive force of 400 kilotons, 25 times more than the American bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945.

The bomb was tested at the Semipalatinsk Test Site. The site is located on the territory of what is now eastern Kazakhstan, towards China and Mongolia. It is interesting that the Soviets conducted a total of 456 nuclear tests on this site.
