  • Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun were married on this day. Propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels and Hitler's secretary Martin Bormann were signed as witnesses.

On this day, while the Soviets unstoppably progressed towards Berlin, Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun were married in the Führerbunker.

They had known each other for 15 years, and were in a relationship for about 13. At the time of the wedding, he was 56, and she 33.

The wedding took place during a modest civil ceremony in a room with geographical charts in the Führerbunker.

Propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels and Hitler’s secretary Martin Bormann were signed as witnesses.

Eva changed her last name to Hitler. When she signed the marriage certificate she mistakenly started to write the letter B but lined it out and wrote Hitler.

The marriage of Adolf and Eva lasted no more than 40 hours. They committed suicide with cyanide capsules, and Hitler, just in case, also shot himself in the temple.
