  • Today the states of the Arab League span a territory of 13,333,296 square kilometers, which is three times larger than the territory of the European Union. The administrative center of the Arab League is located in Cairo, which is also the largest city in the entire Arab world.

The Arab League was founded on this day in 1945. This organization has gathered together all the Arab states. It was founded by six member states, including Egypt, Syria, Transjordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia.

However, that number has since grown to 22 (though Syria’s membership is currently suspended). Indeed, all countries populated by an Arab majority except the Saharan Arab Democratic Republic (formerly Western Sahara, a state which isn’t universally recognized), are currently members of the League.

Today the states of the Arab League span a territory of 13,333,296 square kilometers, which is three times larger than the territory of the European Union. In addition, it has a total of 400 million inhabitants, more than the USA.

The administrative center of the Arab League is located in Cairo, which is also the largest city in the entire Arab world.

It is interesting to note that around 80% of the Arab world is covered by deserts. The youngest of the Arab League’s member states are the Comoros. This island-state is located in the Indian Ocean, between the African coast and the northern tip of Madagascar. The Comoros are also the last state that joined the Arab League (in 1993).
