The currently reigning king of Thailand – Bhumibol Adulyadej – was born on this day in 1927. He is also, according to the Forbes magazine, the richest monarch in the world today. His wealth reportedly reaches a value of about 30 billion dollars. Thailand owns as many as three royal aircraft, manufactured by Boeing and Airbus.



The King’s name – Bhumibol Adulyadej – means “Strength of the Land, Incomparable Power” in the Thai language. The king is the great-grandson of the famous King Mongkut from the film “The King and I” (“Anna and the King of Siam”). However, unlike Mongkut who had 32 wives, and apparently thousands of concubines, the present day king is monogamous – having only one wife with whom he is married for more than 60 years.

Interestingly, King Bhumibol Adulyadej was born on this day in – America. Namely, his father, a prince at that time, studied at Harvard, so the future ruler was born in a hospital within the university. His father graduated medicine at Harvard and became a doctor. Bhumibol Adulyadej also received a high education – in Switzerland – where he graduated. Later, when he became king, he was showered with honorary degrees, so Bhumibol Adulyadej today holds the world record for the number of honorary university degrees (by 1997, he had already received 136 of them).
