The most famous road in the world opened on this day 85 years ago. It originally ran from Chicago to Los Angeles, and was 3,940 kilometers long. During the 1930s, the road played a major role in the mass migrations of American families to the west. The famous song Route 66 was also composed, which was first recorded by Nat King Cole (1947), and later covered by Chuck Berry (1961), The Rolling Stones (1964), and Depeche Mode (1987). Residents of towns along the road became prosperous by providing services to passengers. They lobbied strongly to keep the route of the road unchanged so as not to lose their revenue. However, on 27 June 1985, Route 66 was removed from the United States Highway System. Places that once prospered then lost their significance. Today, parts of the road have historical value and are collectively known as the “Historic Route 66”.
