The first Miss America competition was held in Atlantic City in the U.S. state of New Jersey on this day in 1921.



16-year-old and 155 cm tall Margaret Gorman from Washington D.C. won the competition. She thus became the shortest Miss America in history.

Margaret married Victor Cahill, a real estate agent, in the mid-90s. He had died in 1957, and Margaret in 1995 (aged 90).
