One of the most famous speeches in world history, which American children learn by heart in schools, was delivered on this day in 1863. The speech was spoken on the occasion of the opening of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery for the victims of the Battle of Gettysburg, which occurred four-and-a-half months earlier. President Lincoln spoke masterfully and eloquently. His role model was primarily the Bible, from which he took many of the words and phrases he used. Lincoln’s phrase “government of the people, by the people, for the people” is particularly well-known.
