Emperor Francis Joseph I, the ruler of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, was born on this day in 1830.
He was born in the famed Schönbrunn Palace near Vienna, which had been the residence of the famous Empress Maria Theresa, his great-grandmother.
It is interesting that festivals are still held in some parts of Central Europe on the same date as Francis Joseph’s birthday (18 August).
