Story Highlights

  • historical event: It is interesting that Maria Theresa had as many as sixteen children, among whom two were emperors – Joseph II and Leopold II, and the daughter Marie Antoinette, who was guillotined during the French Revolution.

Empress and Queen Maria Theresa died on this day, at the age of 64. She spent 40 years and 40 days on the throne of Austria, Hungary, and the lands associated with these two crowns. It is interesting that, in Hungary and Croatia, she was considered a king, not a queen. Her father was the last male member of the famous Habsburg dynasty, which died out with him (the present-day Habsburgs are all descended from the female line – through Maria Theresa – took that name, while their real surname is Lothringen, from her husband Francis Stephen of Lotharingia).

It is interesting that Maria Theresa had as many as sixteen children, among whom two were emperors – Joseph II and Leopold II, and the daughter Marie Antoinette, who was guillotined during the French Revolution. All 11 daughters of Maria Theresa had the first name Maria – e.g. Maria Anna, Maria Carolina, Maria Christina, etc. She died of disease on this day in 1780, and was succeeded by her son, Joseph II.
