The Armada had as many as 130 ships with almost 26,000 men and 2,500 guns.



On this day in 1588 the ships of the Spanish Armada began their great campaign to conquer England. Spanish king Phillip II intended to take England from Protestant Queen Elizabeth I, whom he considered a heretic. The ships of the Spanish Armada set sail on this day from Lisbon, the capital of Portugal (Phillip II also ruled over Portugal and many other European countries. The Armada had as many as 130 ships with almost 26,000 men (8000 sailors and 26,000 soldiers) and 2,500 guns.
