After he was deposed, Batista fled to the Dominican Republic, taking with him his vast wealth (allegedly totaling hundreds of millions of dollars).
Batista later moved to Portugal, where he settled in a summer house in the town of Estoril near Lisbon. Many other exiled statesmen were also present there, including Hungarian regent and admiral Miklos Horthy, Italian king Umberto II, Romanian king Charles II, and the Count of Barcelona – father of current Spanish king Juan Carlos.
Fulgencio Batista died on this day in Spain, near the city of Marbella. The cause of his death at the age of 72 was allegedly a heart attack.
