The famous singer Norah Jones, winner of nine Grammy Awards, was born on this day as a child of the famous Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar, one of the most famous Indian musicians. In contrast, her mother was an American, Sue Jones. Norah Jones was born under the name Geethali Norah Jones Shankar, but at the age of 16 she, with the permission of her parents, rejected the Indian names, leaving only the present two-part name.



She grew up in the United States. Her father, had another daughter with his second wife, and she also became a famous musician. Her name is Anoushka Shankar and is Norah’s half-sister. Anoushka plays the sitar and often performed with her father. Ravi Shankar died in 2012. The first album of Norah Jones was “Come Away with Me”, which soon made her famous, especially the hit “Do not Know Why”.
