1592 – Who was the Man who Built the Taj Mahal for his Beloved Wife?

It was his third and favorite wife and she died giving birth to their 14th child. During his reign the Taj Mahal was built, and the Mughal Empire flourished, covering most of India.

On this day the great mogul named Shah Jahan was born. “Great Mogul” was the title of the ruler of Mughal Empire in India, and comes from the word Mongol, because that ruler dynasty was of the Mongol origin. Shah Jahan was the fifth great mogul, and by faith he was a Muslim. During his reign the Mughal Empire flourished, covering most of India. Shah Jahan probably remains best known for the Taj Mahal, the magnificent tomb he built for his wife, Empress Mumtaz Mahal (her name means “jewel of the palace”). She was his third and favorite wife, and she died giving birth to their 14th child. In addition to the Taj Mahal, he also built the lavish new capital Shahjahanabad (core of modern Delhi). He was buried with his wife in the Taj Mahal.
