2012: The Opening Ceremony of the Tallest Skyscraper in the European Union

  • The Shard skyscraper is located just about a hundred meters from the River Thames. The famous London Bridge is only about 200 meters away. It is interesting that a large stake of The Shard skyscraper is owned by the by the State of Qatar.

The inauguration ceremony of The Shard  in London was held on this day in 2012.



It is currently the tallest skyscraper in the entire European Union.

The Shard has 87 stories and stands approximately 309 meters high.

It contains around 110,000 square meters of floor area of various space designations and externally has the shape of a pyramid.

The Shard is located just about a hundred meters from the River Thames.




The famous London Bridge is only about 200 meters away and even better known Tower Bridge, with the lifting system, it is also close by (approximately 700 meters away).

The Shard was designed by award-winning Italian architect Renzo Piano.

It is interesting to note that a large stake of The Shard skyscraper is owned by the State of Qatar.

In fact, the inauguration ceremony on this day in 2012 was opened by then Prime Minister of Qatar, Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber bin Muhammad Al Thani, a member of the ruling dynasty in Qatar.

The ceremony was also attended by Prince Andrew, Duke of York (the younger son of Queen Elizabeth II).
