On this day in 2004 Mark Zuckerberg, a Harvard University student, started a web-site thefacebook.com (“the” was latter excluded). At the time, the word “facebook”, was used in the U.S. to represent a book with pictures and information about students which was published by university bodies, usually at the beginning of the school year, to ease the introductions of their students.

It was Zuckerberg’s intention to create an on-line facebook for Harvard because he was frustrated by the fact that the university officials hadn’t yet done that themselves. His site became highly popular on Harvard – in the first month more than half of the students were already members. So Zuckerberg, after two months, decided to expand it to Stanford, Columbia, and Yale, and later to other American universities.

When the idea reached the national level, Zuckerberg left Harvard and started designing Facebook as a real job. He made a version designed for American high schools, and later expanded the concept to employees of certain companies. Finally, in September 2006 Facebook became available to anyone aged over 13 years with a valid e-mail address.

In 2008 Zuckerberg became the world’s youngest billionaire (U.S. dollars). In 2010 Facebook has, according to the number of visitors, already surpassed even Google.
