It got its name by merging the names of the two banks from which it was created – the BNP (Banque Nationale de Paris) and Paribas (Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas).

The BNP Paribas is also the largest in Europe, not counting the HSBC (Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation), which is based in London, but originates from Hong Kong and Shanghai. It is a traditional sponsor of the Roland Garros tennis tournament.
