On this day American Tara Lipinski became the world champion in figure skating, at the age of 14 years and 10 months, which makes her the youngest world champion ever.

She started skating when she was six. After winning the World Championship in 1997, she performed at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano (Japan). There she won the gold and became the youngest gold medalist in Winter Olympic history.

This record will likely remain hers permanently, because the age limit was raised in the meantime. The U.S. Olympic Committee named her Athlete of the Year. Today, Tara Lipinski works as a sports commentator for figure skating and lives in New York.
