It was his first foreign tour since he became president of the United States.

He spent only five and a half hours in Vietnam, during which time he met with South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu.

They allegedly discussed possible ways to withdraw American troops from Vietnam.

On that occasion, besides the President of South Vietnam, Nixon also met with U.S. military commanders stationed in Vietnam.




He also briefly visited American troops located in Di An, south of Saigon.
