On this day, 31-year-old Norman Morrison, a Quaker from Baltimore, set himself alight in front of the American Ministry of Defense building. He did it to protest against the use of napalm in the Vietnam War. That day, he walked up to the Pentagon with his one-year-old daughter, Emily.



He handed Emily over to a bystander, doused himself with kerosene, and set himself alight in front of the office of American Defense Minister Robert McNamara. In North Vietnam, he became a hero. A street was named after him there, and a postal stamp was issued in his honor.
