Story Highlights

  • Historical event:
  • 19 May 1962
  • Marilyn Monroe died only a few months later (on 5 August 1962). Kennedy was assassinated the following year in the famous Dallas assassination.

On this day in 1962, a birthday party for President John F. Kennedy was held in New York.

At the ceremony, Marilyn Monroe sang a well-known song “Happy Birthday Mr. President” for the President, which was her version of the traditional Anglo-Saxon birthday song.

It is interesting that the celebration of president’s 45th birthday actually took place ten days ahead of his real birthday (which fell on 29 May).

The ceremony was organized at the famous Madison Square Garden in New York, before an audience of about 15,000 people.

Marilyn Monroe was 35 years old at the time and died only a few months later (5 August 1962). She wore a special dress embroidered with 2,500 crystals at the ceremony.

President Kennedy was in the second year of his term of office at the time of the celebration of that birthday. He was killed the following year in the famous assassination in Dallas, when he was 46 years old.
