  • Mussolini opened his jacket and screamed: "Shoot me in the chest!"

Benito Mussolini was captured by Italian communist partisans when he tried to escape from Italy to Switzerland at the end of the World War II.

He was arrested in Dongo, only 12 kilometers from the Swiss border.

With him was his mistress, actress Clara Petacci, who was 28 years younger than him.

Mussolini was allegedly disguised in a German military uniform.

When the communists intend to shoot Mussolini and his mistress, she hugged him tightly and refused to move away from him.

Partisan commander Walter Audisio first shot her and then Mussolini opened his jacket and screamed: “Shoot me in the chest”.

Audisio obeyed and fired several shots into Mussolini’s chest.

The next day, their bodies were displayed in Milan, hung upside down on meat hooks from the roof of an Esso gas station.
