Leonardo Del Vecchio Founded Luxottica, the world’s leading eyewear company.

This day in 1935 marked the birth of Leonardo Del Vecchio, who is the richest Italian in the world today. His wealth is estimated at around 20 billion U.S. dollars, and it was earned rather than inherited.

Leonardo was born in Milan and is one of a series of Italian billionaires of similar age and heritage. Other billionaires of his generation from northern Italy include Giorgio Armani (born in 1934 in Piacenza, some 50 km from Milan) and Silvio Berlusconi (born in Milan in 1936).

Del Vecchio is the founder and chairman of Luxottica, the world’s leading eyewear company. The Luxottica Group S.p.A. controls around 80% of the world’s prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses. He owns brands such as Ray-Ban, Persol, Oakley, and Vogue as well as designer brands like Chanel, Giorgio Armani, Burberry, Versace, Donna Karan etc.
