  • The Chinese People’s Liberation Army is currently the largest army in the world in terms of manpower, and second only to the US Armed Forces in terms of yearly budget.

Today’s date is considered the official founding date of the Chinese PLA. It is currently the largest army in the world in terms of manpower, and second only to the US Armed Forces in terms of yearly budget.

It is interesting to note that the symbol of the Chinese PLA itself contains the date 1 August, in the form of a red star with the numbers one and eight.

The PLA of China was originally known as the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army.

Today it consists of a Ground Force, Navy, Air Force and the Second Artillery Corps, which contains China’s strategic nuclear weapons.

The PLA is under the command of the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China (CPC; there’s also a parallel state Central Military Commission, but its membership mostly coincides with that of the previously-mentioned Commission).

The Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the CPC is de facto the supreme commander of the Chinese Armed Forces. This position is traditionally held by the supreme leader of China itself (currently Xi Jinping).
