  • historical event: Davis wanted to serve as a general in the Confederate army instead of becoming president, but he was nevertheless persuaded to take over the presidency.

On this day, exactly one year after the election of Abraham Lincoln for U.S. president, Jefferson Davis was elected president of the Confederate States of America. It is interesting that he was against secession of the Southern states, but was eventually persuaded to agree to it. Also, he wanted to serve as a general in the Confederate army instead of becoming president, but he was nevertheless persuaded to take over the presidency.



After the Confederacy surrendered, Davis was arrested and put in jail. He was released after two years on a bail of $100,000. He died 22 years later in New Orleans.
