On this day the founder of the strongest Indian political dynasty of the 20th century – Motilal Nehru – was born.

He was himself a politician, twice even the president of the Indian National Congress (the key party in the struggle for the achievement of India’s independence from Britain).

Motilal Nehru’s descendants and relatives achieved such influence in Indian politics that it is probably unprecedented in democratic countries.

Namely, three generations of his descendants held the post of Prime Minister of India. Let us mention them by name:

    • Motilal’s son Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of India;
    • Motilal’s granddaughter Indira Gandhi was the third Prime Minister of India;
    • Motilal’s great-grandson Rajiv Gandhi was the sixth Prime Minister of India

Even today Motilal’s descendants have great influence in politics. His great-grandson Rahul Gandhi is the vice president of the Indian National Congress.

Another great-grandson, Varun Gandhi, is the MP in the Indian parliament. L

et us also mention Sonija Gandhi, who married Motilal’s great-grandson and is the president of the Indian National Congress (she is actually Italian by birth).

Motilal Nehru died in 1931, so he personally did not live to see India become an independent state. Motilal Nehru was a Freemason.
