This day in 1851 marked the birth of Asa Griggs Candler, the man who made a fortune selling Coca-Cola. He was born in the U.S. state of Georgia, near the city of Atlanta, which is today still the world headquarters of the Coca-Cola Company. He was born in the same year as the famous Doc Holliday (a legend of the Wild West), who was also born in Georgia.

Despite the fact that Coca-Cola was actually invented by John Pemberton, Asa Griggs Candler bought the company only a few years after it was founded. By making this sale, Pemberton missed a chance to become fabulously wealthy. A similar fate befell the McDonald brothers, who sold their company (McDonald’s) to Ray Kroc too early.

Asa Griggs Candler initiated a strong marketing campaign for his newly-purchased Coca-Cola brand and made it into one of the most famous drinks in the world. He made millions of dollars and became one of the most influential people in Atlanta, the capital of Georgia. In 1906 he even built the Candler Building, at that time the tallest building in Atlanta. At the age of 65 he was even elected mayor of the city. He was known for his donations to charity.

As a millionaire, Candler owned several luxury homes, including Callan Castle near Atlanta. He died aged 77, and his shares of the Coca-Cola Company were inherited by his children.
