The Library of Congress claims it is the largest in the world with 160 million titles and 1350 km of shelves.

The Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. was founded on this day in 1800. It is one of the largest libraries in the world and de facto the national library of the USA, serving as a sort of depository for all books published in the country.

Among all national libraries in the world, the Library of Congress boasts by far the greatest annual budget – around 600 million dollars. It claims it is the largest library in the world with 160 million titles and 1350 km of shelves. One of the books kept therein is a copy of the famous Gutenberg’s Bible. The only other possible contender for the title of the world’s largest library is the British Library, the national library of the UK.
