Matthias Corvinus’s funerary rites were held in St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Vienna.

This day in 1490 marked the death of the famous Hungarian and Croatian king Matthias Corvinus. He died in Vienna, which had recently been occupied by his troops. His funerary rites were held in St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Vienna.

At the moment of his death, Matthias Corvinus was 47 years old and without a legitimate heir. As far as it is known, he had only one illegitimate son – John Corvinus – whom he groomed as his successor. However, the nobility refused to acknowledge John, electing Vladislaus II (Ladislaus Jagiellon) as the new king.
